I’ve Been off Facebook for Two Months (and Counting)

The good, the bad, and lessons learnt

I used to be a Facebook-a-holic. I had tried being sober once in a while. However, about a week into the so-called “Facebook Detox”, I would get the heebie-jeebies: What were my friends up to? What’s the news trending right now? How were my posts doing?

About two months ago (possibly triggered after watching “The Social Dilemma”) I thought of taking a longer break. I finally realized that it was taking too much of my attention — I couldn’t really afford it since I was going through an important phase in my PhD program. I realized that I became more jealous than usual when I saw the photos of my friends having the time of their lives (or at least they looked so). I was annoyed by the irrelevant drama that was none of my business. Seeing the number of unread notifications irritated me.

I needed a break.

However, it wasn’t as if I could take a complete break — I happen to be in charge of Public Relations for a student club and needed to keep our Facebook page running. How can I achieve that and stay sane?

The solution was simple. I deactivated my account and got the help of some other members to post the flyers I designed. At times I would log in for a brief moment, post a flyer and…
